| | Artists at Home - Van Doesburg's Studio House and Georgia O'Keeffe's Home and Studio | The De Stijl movement, founded by Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. That makes 2017 the perfect time to visit Van Doesburg's own studio house, which embodies his ideas on art with its intersecting cubes and striking primary colours. Sadly, Van Doesburg died before his home could be completed. Georgia O'Keefe, on the other hand, lived and worked in her home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, for many years after restoring the colonial-era adobe structure. She was deeply inspired by the house and its surroundings, living there from 1949 to 1984. Look for the purple pictograms at iconichouses.org. |

| | Iconic Houses Lecture Tour - The Weizmann House by Tal Eyal | Following the success of our previous European lecture tours, Iconic Houses is proud to announce that our 2017 series will feature architect Tal Eyal talking about the Weizmann House. Designed by the German Jewish architect Erich Mendelsohn in the 1930s for Chaim Weizmann (first President of Israel), the house expresses the architect's goal ‘to construct a building which would be Oriental to such an extent as to make a European feel at home in it.’ The resulting estate, with its uniquely undulating sequence of terraces, evokes a ship at sea. There are lecture dates in May in Oslo, Cologne, Rotterdam and Brno.

| | Jan de Jong House Acquired by Hendrick de Keyser Association | The Netherlands' Hendrick de Keyser association for the preservation of historic buildings has acquired the house of Jan de Jong, an Iconic Houses member and noteworthy example of Bossche School architecture. Based on sober lines and numerical relationships, the Dutch Bossche School movement thrived from the 1950s to the 1970s, and is known today mainly for its austere, basilica-like churches. Jan de Jong's serene, simple house similarly evokes an early Mediterranean cloister. The move is the latest move step in the association's recent strategy of acquiring noteworthy 20th-century houses - including Iconic Houses member the Dijkstra House.

By reporting on endangered houses and raising awareness, as well as by offering a platform for petitions and crowd-funding initiatives, we are hopefully contributing to their survival for future generations.

| | Stay in a Modernist Masterpiece - The Van Wassenhove House | Here's your chance to stay in a unique 1970s Belgian masterpiece. Van Wassenhove House opens its doors from May to September this year and can be booked for a minimum of two nights. Designed by architect Juliaan Lampens for Albert van Wassenhove, the house features overlapping living areas constructed in concrete, wood and glass. Now owned by Ghent University and on loan to the Dhondt-Dhaenens Museum, the location is perfect for exploring Latem and the River Lys area - and bikes are available at the house to help you do just that!
